Happy Earth Day and a Giveaway!

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Hey there peeps! Happy Earth day to all. Here's a little info about today:
Earth Day, celebrated April 22, is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. This date is Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, which is often March 20, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969.

I never considered myself a green person but over the last year I've been trying to be more aware of what I can do to support the cause. Here's a list of things I've been doing to GO GREEN
1. I break down all cardboard from our home and recycle it ie: cereal boxes, fiber one bars etc that I used to just throw in the trash.

2. I re-use packaging to create cards and the plastic from Thickers for gift bags

3. I bought all green cleaning products

4. we recycle all cans and plastic and bottles and newspaper

5. we switched out light bulbs to energy savers

6. I bring my own shopping bags everywhere I go, thanks to my super huge bag from GCD I got at CHA I can now can carry all the vitamin waters in the house in one trip from the car. LOL

These are just a few things we're doing to be more green. I'd love to hear your going green tips so post them here until midnight pacific time and I'll draw a name tmr morning to win this fabulous stamp from Unity Stamp Co.

Now I challenge you to make a project today recycling something! Don't forget to leave a link so I can check it out!
Happy Earth Day!

Okay so I would love to win that stamp! Of course the first comment is never drawn... but hey, here's trying!
We're GREEN in our garden. I do my won compost and we have a big barrel that recycles the rain water off the roof to use it to water the garden. It's great!

Love that stamp! We recycle everything that cannot be reused, but we also reuse just about everything. I save glass jars for craft projects and to store little items in. We have our own bags and our grocery store even gives extra points for bringing in your own. We also try to conserve with heat and AC as much as possible. We invested in tupperware and lunch bags so that we dont have to use a lot of bags. I like Callie's idea with the rain barrel - I have looked around for them, but cant find them under $100. Happy Earth Day!

I'd love to win the stamp too. It is so hard to find something new to do each year. We recycle and freetrade just about everything. We are teaching the boys to leave no or small footprints on our mother. They collect litter, if we go some place. They actually tell people not to litter. All our lightbulbs have been changed for years and we turn all lights and tv's, computers, etc are turned off at the power surge protector and boy does that make your electric bill come down.
Unfortunately we live in an apt. too, so our ac and dryer are electric so I hang clothes out to dry and we use fans as much as possible to avoid using them. I could go on forever but remember I'm the old school hippie environmentalist since my 20's and it even affects our vegetarianism. Did you know it takes 610 acers to raise a calf to slaughter but that same land can be used to feed 100 families for a year. I'm jumping off the soapbox now. Peace, and Happy Earth Day Everyone!!!

Love the song on your blog today.

We do all those things too, recycle tin, glass, cardboard etc. Shopping bags at the store, if I do have some plastic bags laying around you can even take those back and they will recycle them or use them again for your new purchases. Lately I have been really bad about SAVING EVERY little thing that I might be able to use in my paper crafting. It's gotten a little out of control! lol

I have similar green tips... I bring a reusable bag to the stor with me, try to conserve energy and water, usr a reusable water bottle and to recycle as much as possible. Happy Earth Day!

I adore this stamp! Thanks for the chance hon.
My tips are about the same as everyone....also, donate old cell phones to charity instead of throwing them away, donate old eye glasses instead of throwing them away (Our eye doctor will accept them....check yours, I have a large bathtub so I do not fill it all the way up, buy organic if you can, re-purpose items and set your thermostat a couple degrees lower/higher.

Happy Earth Day!

That stamp is adorable! Our house has been very green for as long as I can remember. We recycle everything we can and reuse what we can. I recently stopped buying individual snack sized things and have been making my own (like granola bars) to reduce waste in that area...we grow our own lemons, oranges, strawberries and apricots...we use only organic cleaners...non toxic paints...our clothes are cotton, not synthetic...I could go on and on! It isn't a "change" for us, it's a way of life!

Hey Shemaine!! great post today! I don't think there is anything new that we do, but we recycle almost everything we can, always have, since we don't have trash service out here in the boonies!! We recycle aluminum, tin, glass, paper products, etc. We have a compost over the fence from our garden, where all food scraps and dead stuff from the gardens go, reuse the plastic bags from stores, turn the thermostat way down upstairs when there are no kids here to conserve gas (yes we have propane). Hmmm I'm sure I will think up more but thats about it for now. We used to have a paper recycling bin on our road, but the company went out of business and took it away, so we are searching for another company to replace it.

That is a great stamp and i would love to own it. We do green by using a trash compactor so what we do throw away is compacted and less bags go in our trash. we also take all of our cardboard to the local recycle place along with plastic and milk jugs. I also try to use all of my scraps for my craft projects by keep thing on my table in a bin so i can see them. I also buy unity stamps which use recyclable packaging.

You are awesome Shemaine!
We are in the process of going green too, I just joined Melaleuca and they have green products that I am super excited to try!
We have a recycle bin right next to our trash can so there's no excuse not to recycle.
We've switched to online bills instead of regular ones to save on paper.
We have Kleen Kanteens instead of using plastic water bottles.

Great stamp! We do a lot of what others have said. I keep a recycle bin next to the trash can so everything we can goes in there for our curbside pickup. We switched our bulbs out a couple of years ago. I wash my clothes in cold water as much as possible to save on heating costs. Turn things off, etc. I'm still working on getting Zach to switch our Christmas lights to the low wattage ones.

I love that stamp Shemaine! And how great that you are offering it in your blog! At our house we try what we can. We have been extremely conscience of turning lights off, we have saved over 10% from last year. We recently spent our refund money on a heat pump for our house...OMG our gas usage went way down. My husband also put a water holding tank on the side of our house and our sump pump drains into it. We use the water to water our grass and we will be able to use it for playing in in the summer as it is very clean water that is filtered from the earth! NO CHLORINE! yay!

Happy Earth day to you too!!!

We're pretty green over here on our little island, we compost, recycle everything we can(I even take the discarded video, dvd and cd cases home from work to recycle), we have earth hour once a month in this house...we had so much fun on the first one, we decided to keep it up!
No bottled water either, we use reusable water bottles, really there's so much to list. I am honestly trying my very best to keep this household and our lives as green as possible. Glad to hear you are too! :)

I am with Callie. We also have a compost pile and have huge trash cans ($15 each at Walmart and they work great!) on every drain spout that we use for our garden. I have also been saving bath water and dish water that is carried or pumped into the rain barrels for the garden. We also recycle cardboard mostly, cans, glass. We reuse a lot of container as well especially the coffee cans that have the plastic lids. They hold kids crafts very well. :) I recently bought a few canvas bags that I take to the store instead of using plastic. With the kids allergies, I am buying less prepared foods .. more produce and meats that I have to make at home. We also changed all of our lightbulbs out over a year ago tot he ones you spoke of.. I honestly did not know how much I recycled until this post! I could list more.. but I am already taking up too much space as it is. Happy Earth day!!!

I love to use the plastic juice containers that frozen juice comes in, decorate them and use them to hold scrap supplies.
